Symbol of the Starling
The cat pounces, dragging the brown fluff out of my sight.
I met the starling fledgling while writing Starling Warrior. At first, I blamed her. "Stupid bird! Just fly away." Then I realized, she was a fledgling.

She didn't fly away because she couldn't.
Meet the starling: Loud, black, and invasive. In the right light, as iridescent as a hummingbird's throat or peacock's tailfeathers. Just wait until you see what a group of starlings can do.
Symbol of the Cottonwood
I twirl and dance, stretching up in the air, fingertips just grazing the cottonwood fluffs.
I met Cottonwood in college, a moment of play in the middle of my apartment complex. She faithfully followed me. I cut down her sisters, and she stood sentinel outside my bedroom window while I wrote Starling Warrior.

She is the fastest growing tree,
the pioneer who will send her joyful fluffs to grow where other trees would never dare.
"I see no forest here," you say.
She laughs.
"Silly.
I am the forest," Cottonwood replies.
